Lev Shulyak - President in Memorium

Lev Shulyak

The late Lev Shulyak, Founder and President in Memorium, was an inventor for almost four decades, with over twenty patents. Born in Moscow, he received his degree as a Mechanical Engineer from the Moscow College of Highway Construction. He worked as a mechanical engineer on the construction of the Bratsk, Siberia hydro-power station -- the largest of its time. There he was involved in designing, manufacturing and implementing the first automatic system for the production of wet concrete mix.

In 1961, he discovered Genrich Altshuller's first book on the subject of inventing, How to Become an Inventor. This book helped him in the problem solving process, and led to many subsequent inventions. Within a year, he received his very first patent on an electromechanical transducer.

Shulyak was later invited to lead a group of mechanical engineers at the Moscow Orgenergostroy Project Institute to develop contemporary concrete plants. Shulyak received 15 patents on automatic control systems and mechanical equipment that saved millions of dollars in the construction of several hydro-power stations.

In 1974, he emigrated to the United States and settled in Worcester, Massachusetts. From 1976 to 1983, he was a Project Manager for Norton Company, the world's largest manufacturer of abrasive materials. Utilizing his knowledge of TRIZ, he saved hundreds of thousands of dollars for this company by redesigning process equipment. During that time he also patented and successfully marketed several consumer products.

In 1984, Shulyak was the first person in the United States to teach engineers and children TRIZ methodology. In 1990, he translated Altshuller's popular book And Suddenly the Inventor Appeared. He founded the Technical Innovation Center in 1991 and began teaching many courses on TRIZ and Systematic Innovation. Mr. Shulyak succeeded in fulfilling his dream: The Altshuller Institute for TRIZ Studies, to benefit both the industry of today and the children of tomorrow.

Mr. Shulyak, an accomplished pilot, was killed in a tragic flying accident in December, 1999.
